Merlette Guesses Right But Still Loses Chips

Level 37 : Blinds 400,000/800,000, 800,000 ante

Adriaan Jacobs raised to 2,000,000 from the button, and Paul Merlette defended his big blind.

The flop came 8J3, and Merlette check-called the 1,500,000 continuation-bet of Jacobs.

They both checked through the J on the turn to the 9 on the river. Merlette checked for the final time. Jacobs bet 5,500,000 to send Merlette into the tank.

"How much?" Merlette asked the dealer, who confirmed the bet size. "You bet the flop, checked the turn? You either hit the eight or have a missed flush draw. Maybe hit a pair of nines?" Merlette mumbled.

"I'm gonna call you with a pair of threes," Merlette said before putting in the chips for the call.

Jacobs tabled the Q9 for the rivered pair of nines (and a missed flush draw indeed) to claim the pot.
